In September 2020, Wuxi initiated to build a national ecological garden city. In September 2021, building a park city is proposed in the report of the 14th Party Congress of Wuxi. In March 2022, Wuxi managed to become a provincial ecological garden city.

     As an important window that displays the scenery of Xidong New Town, Jiulihe Lake Scenery Belt is not only a name card, but also an important ecological corridor.

    This year witnesses the landscape greening transformation project on the southern side of Jiulihe River. Among the total scenery area of 130 thousand square meters, the project covers an area of 44 thousand square meters with a total length of 2.5 kilometers. The theme of this ecological corridor that runs from west to east is its waterside scenery for people interacting with water and the ecological plant for appreciation.

     Before the “Transformation”, the scenery belt used to be a barren land. “It was abandoned once, but now it's not. Thanks to flowers, grass, green trees, and walking trails, the environment has become much more beautiful.” said by Aunt Zhang, a resident that has a walk here. She was full of praise for the changes in this area.

    The whole transformation is “unique” in creating a complete continuous slow traffic system with three theme areas: the estuary experience area, the characteristic leisure area, and the ecological protection area. In the estuary experience area, a characteristic landscape bridge across the green path represents a modern and stylish style. Its shape instantly lights up the lakeside scenery. If people walk across the bridge, they can enjoy a full sight of the scenery alongside the lake bank. In the characteristic leisure area, a comfortable, safe, and pleasant water-friendly rest environment and a space for exchange and enjoyment have been created for education through entertainment. In the ecological protection zone, the ecological corridor emphasizes the significance of ecological protection while creating a comfortable leisure space. Rows of green trees, contiguous lawns, shaded parking lots, and colorful trails link the carefully matched landscape scenes. Through the waterfront public space, people can have a glimpse of the ecological, green and low-carbon development of the new town.

     In recent years, Xidong New Town has actively promoted the upgrading of greening by emphasizing the use of corner land, abandoned land, idle land, etc.. The town continues to promote the work of “leaving space for greening and inserting green in every possible place”. Also it constantly polishes its name card as new ecological town, and makes green its most beautiful background color.

    By 2023, the 89-kilometer-long slow traffic system will connect all the large and small parks and natural scenery in the north and south plates such as Cuiping Mountain Tourist Resort, Jiaoyang East Road, Jiulihe River Wetland Park, Yingyuehu Lake Central Park, and Lander Sports Park. The system will build a new city posture of “water and green interdependence and urban forest integration” with the rapidly rising modern industrial new town.
