Jiaoshan Temple

Jiaoshan Temple

Jiaoshan Temple, located on the west hillside of Jiaoshan, was built in the early years of Liang Taiqing with a history of 1450 years. In the sixth year of Liang Tianjian (507), he built a Buddhist temple in his house. It was named Jiaoshan Temple. It was rebuilt in the fifth year of Sui Daye (609). Zhan Ran (711-782), the ninth ancestor of the Tiantai School of Buddhism in the Tang Dynasty, once lived in Jiaoshan Temple to preach. After Zhan Ran passed away, the abbot of the temple named the place where he taught the scriptures “Zhan Ran Hall”. In the Jianyan period of the Southern Song Dynasty, Li Gang, known to Wuxi people as a famous master fighting against Jin Dynasty, asked for the temple to worship his ancestors. Then, the temple was changed to "Chongqin Baode Temple". There are Dou Ruquan, Xianghua Bridge, Xiao Qing's tomb, Crushed Stone Dock, Sharpened Sword Stone, and Zhan Ran Hall rebuilt by later generations. The east and west foothills of the temple are surrounded by green bamboos. There is a mountain gate in front of the temple, and inside is the yard and subordinate halls at two sides. The main hall is in the middle with five pillars. The plaque “Three Holy Temples in the West” written by Master Mingshan was hung in the middle. The temple also has statues of Sakyamuni, Amitabha, and Medicine Buddha. On the west side are Douru Spring, Li Gang Temple and Guandi Hall. The Guandi Hall is dedicated to Duke Guan, Chen Gaoren, and Zhang Xun.
